$5000 Literary Prize Awarded

Canadian Christians produced some of the best writing published in 2009, including an ex-gang member, an expert on women’s leadership and a representation of journalists, freelance writers and novelists from a wide range of church traditions and Canadian locations.

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO—The Word Guild, a national association of writers and editors who are Christian, presented the top awards in writing for 2009 by Canadians who write from a Christian worldview at a black-tie gala in Mississauga on June 16, 2010.

The association awarded its very first Grace Irwin Award, a $5,000 prize donated by her nephew John W. Irwin and his wife M. Eleanor Irwin, to Mags Storey of Newmarket, Ontario, for her book If Only You Knew (Kregel Publishing), a novel that was also awarded prizes for best young adult book and romance of the year.

“I’m stunned, and shocked, and extremely honored,” exclaimed Storey, Ontario correspondent for Christian Week. “I never expected in a million years that a quirky romance novel would ever get this degree of recognition, particularly considering the many strong fiction and nonfiction Christian books it was up against.”

“I’m especially excited because If Only You Knew definitely is not your typical ‘Christian’ novel. Not by a long shot! It’s a funny, romantic mystery that takes a real, gut-wrenchingly honest look at how bad our churches sometimes look to people outside our walls—especially teenagers.”

The judges, Don Bastian, Ray Wiseman and N. J. Lindquist, found the entries for The Grace Irwin Award of such high quality they chose to bestow 'honourable mention' on three books: Kingdom Culture: Growing the Missional Church by Phil Wagler, published by Word Alive Press; Talking to the Dead by Bonnie Grove, published by David C. Cook; and In the Eye of Deception by Nikki Rosen, published by McMaster University: Innovative Press.

The Irwin Award, now Canada’s largest literary award for writers who are Christian, honours the late author, classics scholar and ordained minister Grace Lilian Irwin. It will be awarded annually to the single best book entered in The Word Guild’s annual awards contest, known as the Canadian Christian Writing Awards. The contest draws nearly 250 entries each year across 34 categories.

Master of Ceremonies Herbie Kuhn, in-house voice of the Toronto Raptors basketball team, announced the awards at the gala, held in the headquarters building of World Vision Canada.

Two others special awards were conferred—the annual Leslie K. Tarr Award for outstanding career achievement and the Partnership Award. The Tarr Award went to celebrated children’s author Jean Little, 78, of Guelph, Ontario. Already a member of the Order of Canada, she has authored 45 books, many of them unsentimental portrayals of children coping with abuse, abandonment, disabilities and other challenges. Little has been legally blind from birth and writes using a talking computer.

The Partnership Award went to Donald G. Bastian, a long-time affiliate of The Word Guild and former managing editor for Stoddart Publishing, now owner of Bastian Publishing Services Ltd.

Bastian was chosen because of his long-term support of The Word Guild. He has served as faculty at their annual flagship writers’ conference, Write! Canada. He has mentored and supported fledgling Christian writers and published several The Word Guild authors. And the goals he has pursued during his career in mainline publishing have paralleled those of the association.

The Word Guild presents the award periodically to an individual or organization that has shown exceptional support and encouragement for Canadian writers and editors who are Christian.

Besides the multiple wins picked up by Mags Storey, other multiples went to Carolyn Arends of Surrey, British Columbia, for inspirational article, column and song lyric, and to Thomas Froese of Ancaster, Ontario, (based mainly in Uganda) for “article—general readership” and “book—cultural.”

Ex-gang member Michael Bull Roberts of Mississauga, Ontario, won the award for best book aimed at non-Christian readers. His autobiography, The Tender Heart of a Beast (Trimatrix Management Consulting), tells how he went from being one of Canada’s wealthiest drug lords to become the sponsor of a Christian newsletter that reaches into more than 700 prisons in North America and Hong Kong.

Other winning novelists include Bonnie Grove for Talking to the Dead (David C. Cook), Eric E. Wright for Captives of Minara (Word Alive Press) and Shane Joseph for After the Flood (Hidden Book Press).

Among the non-fiction book winners are Craig Evans of Acadia Divinity College for his book Jesus, the Final Days (Augsburg Fortress Canada); Colin McCartney of UrbanPromise Toronto for Red Letter Revolution: If We Did Revolution Jesus’ Way (Castle Quay Books); Eileen Stewart-Rhude of The World Evangelical Alliance for The Leadership Edge: Seven Keys to Dynamic Christian Leadership for Women (Castle Quay Books); and James K. A. Smith of Calvin College for Desiring the Kingdom: Worship, Worldview and Cultural Formation (Baker Publishing).

First place awards, along with some awards of merit, were given in 18 book categories and 14 categories for shorter works (two categories had no awards).

The winning-est Canadian locations included Ontario (authors from the Greater Toronto Area won nine awards) and British Columbia (authors from the Greater Vancouver area won seven), but winners also come from Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Following the awards gala 250 writers, editors, agents and publishers met in Guelph, Ontario, for three days at Canada’s largest Christian writers’ conference, Write! Canada (www.writecanada.org), also sponsored by The Word Guild.

ABOUT THE WORD GUILD
CANADIAN CHRISTIAN WRITING AWARDS

The awards are sponsored by The Word Guild, a national association with the mandate of connecting, developing and promoting Canadian writers and editors who are Christian. Formerly known as The God Uses Ink Awards, these prizes have been awarded annually since 1988. The Word Guild assumed responsibility for them in 2002, revamping and expanding the program from its original eight categories to the current 34.

The contest is open to all writers who have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status, and is not restricted to members of The Word Guild. Entrants are asked to affirm The Apostles’ Creed as a condition of acceptance. Opinions and viewpoints in the winning works represent the authors’ personal beliefs and are not necessarily endorsed by The Word Guild.

Although contest rules do not require an explicit affirmation of Christian belief within an entered piece of writing, judges looked for an underlying expression of Christian worldview. Entries were judged according to excellence of writing; impact (the inspirational or informational value making it worthwhile); fulfillment of stated purpose; suitability to target audience; originality and freshness of style.

Businesses, organizations or individuals who would like to provide concrete support and encouragement to Canadian writers who are Christian are welcome to inquire about the benefits of awards sponsorships. Charitable tax receipts are available. Sponsorship opportunities may be seen at www.canadianchristianwritingawards.com/become-a-sponsor.

TrackBack Address.

Beloved Children’s Author Jean Little to Receive
2010 Leslie K. Tarr Award for Outstanding Career Achievement

Gifted storyteller Jean Little has won young readers and awards by not sugar-coating life’s challenges.

Mississauga, Ontario — Jean Little, 78, of Guelph, Ontario, award-winning children’s author and member of the Order of Canada, will receive the twenty-second annual Leslie K. Tarr Award for outstanding career achievement.

The award will be presented on Wednesday, June 16th, during The Word Guild awards gala at the World Vision headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario.

Named in honour of its first recipient, the late Leslie K. Tarr, a Toronto journalist, editor, and teacher, the Tarr Award celebrates a major career contribution to Christian writing and publishing in Canada. Previous recipients include author Rudy Wiebe and poet Margaret Avison, both two-time Governor General's Literary Award winners, and Janette Oke, whose inspirational novels have sold over 28 million copies.

The Leslie K. Tarr Award is sponsored by Tyndale University College and Seminary and administered by The Word Guild.

Jean Little, author of 45 books, is a favourite of readers around the world and her work has been translated into many languages. She is known for unsentimental portrayals of children and youth who are coping with challenges such as abuse, abandonment and disabilities, and learning more about themselves in the process. In Language Arts, Meguido Zola says, "…the real thrust of Jean Little's novels — [is] recognizing and mastering the enemy within rather than tilting at the one without."

“We chose Jean because of her accomplishments,” said Wendy Elaine Nelles, a member of the selection committee. “The number and quality of her books, her ability to affirm young readers, and her use of Canadian settings, stories, and history are just a few of the reasons. As well, the values she portrays are based on her Christian worldview.”

Jean Little has written novels, picture books, poetry, short stories, and two autobiographical books. Among them are some of Canada’s best-loved works for children, such as From Anna and Pippin the Christmas Pig.
In 1962 her first children’s novel, Mine for Keeps, about a child with cerebral palsy, won the Little, Brown Canadian Children’s Book Award. In 1977 she won the Governor General's Literary Award for Children's Literature for Listen for the Singing; in 1985 she won the Canadian Children's Book of the Year Award for Mama's Going to Buy You a Mockingbird.

In 1996, her novel about her mother’s childhood, called His Banner Over Me, won the I.O.D.E. Violet Downey Book Award.

In 2002, Orphan at My Door from the Dear Canada series won the Canadian Library Association Book of the Year award and, in 2004, two of her books, I Gave My Mom a Castle and Brothers Far From Home were CLA Book of the Year honour books. In addition she has received the Vicky Metcalf Award for Children’s Literature and been nominated four times for the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Award.

The writer was born in Taiwan in 1932 to Canadian doctors serving as medical missionaries under the United Church of Canada. They returned to Canada when Jean was seven. Jean graduated in 1955 from the University of Toronto with an honours degree in English, and after that taught children with disabilities until 1962.

Jean Little, who has been legally blind from birth, writes using a talking computer. She has taught Children’s Literature at the University of Guelph, and has a public elementary school in Guelph named after her. In 1993 she was made a member of the Order of Canada for her outstanding contribution to Canadian children's literature.

During the gala, The Word Guild will also present some 34 awards in a variety of categories, including fiction and non-fiction, poetry, articles and song lyrics. Herbie Kuhn, popular speaker and in-house announcer for the Toronto Raptors basketball team, will host it. The event, which is open to the public, starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at World Vision Canada’s headquarters, 1 World Drive, Mississauga, Ontario. See here for more information

An ex-gang member, a Dead Sea Scrolls expert, a political scientist, award-winning journalists, pastors, and well-know novelists, among others, are shortlisted for The Word Guild’s 2010 Canadian Christian writing awards.

TORONTO — The growing popularity of The Word Guild’s annual writing awards is evidenced again this year with a record number of submissions. A total of 245 entries was received, up from the record number of 237 set last year.

“Entries this year represent work by Christians from across the denominational spectrum,” says Denise Rumble, managing director of The Word Guild. “There are differences in how writers express their faith but these awards unite us in the elements of Christian belief and witness common to all who follow Jesus Christ.”

Finalists in the 34 categories, that include non-fiction books, novels, articles, columns, blogs, poems, and song lyrics published in 2009, are distributed across seven provinces. British Columbia writers account for 19 finalist placements; Alberta 7; Saskatchewan 5; Manitoba 5; Ontario 38; New Brunswick 1 and Nova Scotia 2. Each winner will be presented with a cash prize, a certificate and a specially designed lapel pin to mark his or her achievement.

Among the 61 finalists is world-renowned expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls Craig Evans of Acadia Divinity College in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, whose recent book Jesus, the Final Days is shortlisted in the “Book–Biblical Studies” category. Award-winning journalist Thomas Froese’s book Ninety-Nine Windows: Reflections of a Reporter from Arabia to Africa and Other Roads Less Travelled is shortlisted in three categories.

Political scientist John Redekop, previous winner of the prestigious Leslie K. Tarr Award, is shortlisted with five articles. Well-known novelists N.J. Lindquist (Markham, Ontario), Bonnie Grove (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Marcia Lee Laycock (Blackfalds, Alberta), Linda Hall (Fredericton, New Brunswick) and Eric E. Wright (Colborne, Ontario) are all shortlisted. Laycock and Lindquist are finalists in the blog series, a new category for the awards this year.

One new author of interest is Michael “Bull” Roberts (Mississauga, Ontario), an ex-gang member and formerly one of Canada’s wealthiest drug lords, now the sponsor of a Christian newsletter that reaches into more than 700 prisons in North America and Hong Kong. His autobiography The Tender Heart of a Beast is in the running for a prize in four separate book categories.

The above mentioned authors, along with dozens of other Canadian writers, many of them finalists for the first time, will be honoured at the 2010 Awards Gala in Mississauga, Ontario.

A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the first ever Grace Irwin Award. The $5,000 award — donated by retired book publisher John W. Irwin (nephew of the award’s namesake) and his wife Eleanor—represents Canada’s largest literary award for writers who are Christian. It will celebrate the best book published in 2009 by a Canadian author who writes from a Christian worldview.

The books entered into this contest are those of all finalists in the 2010 book award categories. For the winner this will be the “icing on the cake.”

The evening will also see the presentation of two other key awards: The Leslie K. Tarr Award for career achievement and The Word Guild Partnership Award for exceptional support and encouragement for Canadian writers who are Christian. Last year’s winners were Ray Wiseman (Tarr) and Brian Stiller (Partnership).

For the third year in a row, the black-tie gala will be hosted by Herbie Kuhn, popular speaker and in-house announcer for the Toronto Raptors basketball team. It will be held on Wednesday June 16 at 7:30 p.m. at World Vision Canada, 1 World Drive, Mississauga, Ontario. The public is cordially invited. Tickets may be ordered online here or by e-mailing info (at) thewordguild (dot) com. Tickets are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door.

WRITING CONTEST UNCOVERS NEW TALENT, AWARDS PRIZES

The Word Guild rewards writing excellence by never-before-published authors in its 2010 “God Uses Ink” writing awards.

Guelph, Ontario— Seven novice writers have been awarded prizes in The Word Guild’s “God Uses Ink” writing Contest for 2010. These winners represent a group of emerging writers ready to augment the already large number of award-winning Canadian writers who write from a Christian worldview.

Each year The Word Guild, a Canadian association of writers and editors who are Christian, recognizes the talents of aspiring writers who have never been published.  Awards are given in three age groups—14 to 19, 20 to 39 and 40-plus.

“The entries in the 20 to 39-year category were solid and varied,” commented Violet Nesdoly, one of the two judges.  “There was not a big range between the bottom and top marks with a nice mix of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. For readers of Canadian writers who are Christian, there is an interesting variety of voices waiting in the wings.”

Joanne Walton of Kingston, Ontario, won in the 20 to 39 year-old category and Maureen Newman of Granville Ferry, Nova Scotia, took top honours in the 40-plus category.

Jordana Shell of Claresholm, Alberta, and Anita Rossi McQuarrie of King City, Ontario, took second place in the 20 to 39 and 40-plus categories respectively.

Third place finishes went to Corrine Clyne of Winnipeg in the 14 to 19 category, Heather Boersma, also of Winnipeg, in the 20 to 39 category and Dean Crawford of London, Ontario, in the 40-plus category.

The first prize in each division—free registration to Write! Canada, Canada’s largest Christian writers’ conference—is worth nearly $400. Second prize is a $100 gift certificate for The Word Guild and third prize is a $50 gift certificate for The Word Guild, both of which may be used for conference registration, membership, etc.

This year’s topic was a challenging one, “Ignite the Creative Side of Your Brain,” which is also the theme for the 26th annual Write! Canada conference, to be held from June 17 to 19, 2010, in Guelph, Ontario.

Entries could be submitted in fiction, non-fiction or poetry.

The contest received 27 submissions.

Fifth annual event to feature new $5,000 Literary Award

TORONTO—Tickets are now on sale for the fifth annual Canadian Christian Writing Awards Gala. This black tie event, hosted for the third year by Herbie Kuhn, in-house voice of the Toronto Raptors, and honouring the best work published in 2009 by Canadian writers who are Christian, will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the headquarters of World Vision Canada, (1 World Drive, Mississauga, Ontario).

This year’s gala marks the fifth anniversary of the event as a stand-alone occasion. One of the highlights of the evening is expected to be the announcement of the recipient of the first ever Grace Irwin Award. The $5,000 award—donated by retired book publisher John W. Irwin (nephew of the award’s namesake) and his wife Eleanor—represents Canada’s largest literary award for writers who are Christian. It will celebrate the best book published in 2009 by a Canadian author who writes from a Christian worldview.

The award was established to honour the late author, classics scholar and ordained minister Grace Lilian Irwin, a Canadian Christian who published works of both fiction and nonfiction.

“Aunt Grace would be pleased to be remembered in this way,” says John Irwin. “Anything that recognizes outstanding Christian writing would have pleased her.”

Once again, the evening promises to be a highlight for the diverse group of more than 200 amateur and professional writers, journalists and authors expected to gather from across the country. Together with family, friends, reading fans and members of the Canadian publishing industry, they will celebrate the breadth and depth of work published by Canadian Christians throughout the previous year.

Awards will be presented in 34 categories including best nonfiction books, novels, articles, columns, poems and song lyrics. A brand new category will honour the best blog post series of 2009.

“Entries this year represent work by Christians from across the denominational spectrum,” says Denise Rumble, managing director of The Word Guild, the organization behind the event. “There may be differences in how each writer expresses his or her faith, but these awards unite us in the core elements of Christian belief and witness common to all who follow Jesus Christ.”

Last year’s award winners include author and newspaper columnist Thomas Froese, theologian and cultural commentator John G. Stackhouse, and singer, songwriter and author Carolyn Arends.

The evening will also see the presentation of two other key awards: The Leslie K. Tarr Award for career achievement and The Word Guild Partnership Award for exceptional support and encouragement for Canadian writers who are Christian. Last years’ winners were Ray Wiseman (Tarr) and Brian Stiller (Partnership).

Join us for an exciting evening of entertainment and readings from winning work, followed by a reception.

Ticket prices start at $10 (for members of The Word Guild, $15 for non-members). Payment can be processed through PayPal. Purchasers will receive a receipt, which can be printed and brought to the Gala to use as their “ticket.” Tickets also available at the door for $20.

Each year, this event kicks off Canada’s largest writers’ conference for Christians, Write! Canada.
