"I entered the God Uses Ink Novice Writing Competition in 2005 (after hearing about it the year before when I attended Write! Canada for the first time). At the time, I was discouraged and close to giving up on writing. I entered as a last attempt to see whether I was any good at all because God Uses Ink let me compete against people who were just like me rather than against published professionals. I'd never entered a competition before, and to be honest, I expected to fail. But I didn't. Instead I took third, and it was the encouragement I so desperately needed. By the next year, I couldn't enter again because I'd sold my first article. I used my prize money to sign up for a membership to The Word Guild, and through TWG have learned invaluable lessons and made lifelong friends–like my co-writer and critique partner Lisa Hall-Wilson who took first the year I entered."
